In a recent Instagram reel, Walker, also known as “The Mutant,” expressed his concerns about bodybuilders who prioritize their physical appearance over their mental and emotional well-being. He emphasized that while it’s understandable to be in a bad mood during prep, which typically lasts 4-6 weeks, it’s not acceptable to maintain a negative attitude throughout the year.

Walker’s comments were motivated by his own experiences and observations within the bodybuilding community. He noted that the constant pursuit of leanness can lead to a range of negative emotions, including irritability, anxiety, and depression. Moreover, this obsession can also damage relationships with friends and family, who may find it challenging to be around someone who is consistently in a bad mood. As Walker aptly put it, “The people around you, that you surround yourself with, don’t want to be around you, cuz you’re an ass.”

Why Staying Lean All Year Round is a Mistake

Walker’s warning is not just about the social consequences of staying lean; it’s also about the physical and mental health implications. When bodybuilders prioritize leanness over their overall well-being, they may be more likely to engage in disordered eating, overtraining, and other unhealthy behaviors. This can lead to a range of health problems, including nutrient deficiencies, injuries, and mental health issues. As Walker emphasized, “Pick and choose, when to be an A-hole, you know? I do believe, four to six weeks out, if you’re a little bit of a d**k, okay. You know, we get it, not a problem, we understand the lifestyle, but if you’re like that when you don’t even compete, you need a reality check, like, a big one.”

A Balanced Approach to Bodybuilding

Walker’s message is not anti-bodybuilding; rather, it’s a call to adopt a more balanced approach to the sport. He encourages bodybuilders to prioritize their overall health and well-being, rather than just focusing on their physical appearance. This includes allowing for periods of rest and recovery, eating a balanced diet, and engaging in activities that promote mental and emotional well-being. As Walker noted, “If there is anyone feeling some sort of way, feeling like they can’t find that groove or confidence within themselves, one thing I will say is don’t stop trusting yourself. No one knows yourself better than you do, no one knows what’s best for you better than you do, believe in yourself and trust your gut.”
