Damar Hamlin Continues to Share His Story 3 Years After Near-Death Experience
Damar Hamlin’s Journey: From Near-Death Experience to Inspiring Others
Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin has come a long way since his near-fatal experience on January 2, 2023, when he went into cardiac arrest after a blunt force hit to the chest during a game against the Cincinnati Bengals. With the three-year anniversary of that life-changing moment approaching, Hamlin reflects on how it has impacted his life and his newfound passion for inspiring others.
Hamlin recently made a cameo in the Hallmark Channel’s Countdown to Christmas lineup, The More the Merrier, a project that hits close to home for him. The movie features five real-life members of Abbott’s HeartMates community, who have experienced heart issues similar to Hamlin’s and have overcome incredible challenges. As an ambassador for the program, Hamlin has found inspiration in the younger kids he works with, who have become a part of his new game day ritual.
Overcoming Fear and Finding Purpose
Hamlin admits that he still deals with the emotions of that day every time he takes the field, but he has learned to channel his fear into a positive force. “Fear is a real thing, and everybody experiences it,” he says. “What makes people different is what you do with the fear. If you can persevere through the fear, you cannot let the fear handicap you.” Hamlin’s experience has given him a deeper connection to his purpose and a sense of gratitude for life.
The incident has transformed Hamlin into a more mindful and purpose-driven person. “My life has truly just changed, and it’ll forever be different,” he explains. “I let that community and that feeling guide my actions and movements, and it’s been amazing so far. I’m thankful.” Hamlin’s story serves as a testament to the human spirit’s ability to overcome adversity and find meaning in the face of challenges.
A Newfound Appreciation for Life
Hamlin’s near-death experience has given him a newfound appreciation for life and a sense of responsibility to use his platform to inspire others. He stays “extra prayed up” since the hit and has found solace in his work with the HeartMates community. The youth he works with have become a source of inspiration and motivation for him, and he often calls one of his HeartMates before games to get a boost of encouragement.
As Hamlin continues to share his story, he hopes to inspire others to find the positive in their own struggles. “I always just try to find a positive outlook to keep myself going,” he says. “I understand how I was used in that moment, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of others.” For more on Damar Hamlin’s journey, visit Here.
